Nicaragua using 'shoot to kill' strategy on protesters, Amnesty International says

Image
Anti-government demonstrators protest Saturday in Managua. Nicaragua has instituted a "shoot to kill" policy in dealing with protests that has resulted in an "alarming number of deaths," according to an investigation by Amnesty International. According to the 34-page report, released Tuesday, the government has violated citizens' human rights and not only used "excessive force in the context of the protests, but possibly carried out extrajudicial executions in conjunction with pro-government armed groups." Civil unrest has entered its sixth week in Nicaragua as protests continue throughout the country. At least 76 people have been killed, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, with close to 900 injured in what appears to be the largest protests the country has seen since the civil war ended in 1990. Human rights lawyer and Amnesty International Director of Americas Erika Guevara-Rosas said the death toll is now at ...

Opinion: Immigrants must perform extraordinary feats to gain acceptance

Image
As a sans-papiers, an immigrant without papers Mamadou Gassama should have been condemned to a life in the shadows, dodging immigration officials and living in bad social housing.  but for his superhuman feat of climbing four balconies to save a little boy from certain death. No papers, but a desire for a better life. No papers, but strong arms and a brave heart. By that singular act of bravery, Gassama suddenly  qualified for French citizenship  and showed that being a good immigrant is not so much about being legal or illegal, right or wrong, black or white. It is about being desired. For immigrants of color the world over, desirability is too often judged by high achievement, by doing or going above and beyond the ordinary. You cannot just be smart enough, talented enough, strong enough, brave enough. You must be exceptional. Gassama's fast track route to citizenship will certainly remain the exception as French President Emmanuel Macron has made...

Turkey to look elsewhere for jets if US blocks F-35 sale

Image
Turkey will buy jets elsewhere if the United States stops it buying Lockheed Martin F-35s, Ankara’s foreign minister was quoted as saying amid tensions between the allies over defence and the fate of a jailed U.S. pastor. NATO member Turkey has caused unease in Washington with its decision to buy S-400 surface-to-air missiles from Russia and drawn criticism over its detention of a U.S. Christian pastor, Andrew Brunson, on terrorism charges. A U.S. Senate committee last week passed its version of a $716 billion defence policy bill, including a measure to prevent Turkey from buying the Lockheed jets, citing Brunson and the Russian missile deal. Turkey could procure jets elsewhere, broadcaster NTV cited Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as telling reporters on his return flight from a visit to Germany, although it was unlikely that Washington would be able to back out of the deal. “The pre-payments for this project have been made. This is a comprehensive agreement. It’s no...

‘Terrorist’ kills two policewomen and passer-by in Belgium

A man killed two policewomen and a bystander in the Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday before being shot dead in a gunbattle at a school in what prosecutors are treating as a terrorist attack. The man was named by public broadcaster RTBF as a 36-year-old petty criminal who had been let out on day-release from a local prison on Monday. It said investigators were looking into whether he converted to Islam and had been radicalised in jail. A public prosecutor told a news conference that the man set upon the policewomen from behind with a knife, described as a box-cutter by RTBF, around 10:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) on a boulevard in the centre of Belgium’s third city, near the German border. Having stabbed them, prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said, the man then seized one of their handguns and shot both women dead before walking down the street and shooting dead a 22-year-old man who was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car. The man then made his way into a high school where he to...
